A program of Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital and PennDOT

With a focus on safety, health, fitness and fun, the Safe Routes to School national initiative hopes to make walking and biking to school a way of life again.

Designed to fit into the goals of the Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion’s nrgBalance movement to make healthy living easier and more appealing, the Safe Routes to School Academy is committed to helping more schools and communities create successful Safe Routes to School programs throughout the state.

By partnering with Pennsylvania schools, parents, health officials, local governments and public representatives, the Academy helps to address the safety concerns of parents by developing infrastructure plans for safe walking and biking routes, celebrating International Walk to School Day, and establishing Walking School Bus programs featuring mileage contests and other fun incentive activities that motivate children to get moving – and have a great time doing it.
