PANA Mini-Grants Fall 2008

The Safe Routes to School Academy provides a two-year mini-grant program to support partnership development and coordinate planning and evaluation of SRTS efforts around schools that include grades up to 8th.

Capacity Building Mini-Grant ($5,000)

Includes seed money plus a technical assistance provider to guide partnerships through the development of a thorough SRTS action plan.

Education and Encouragement Mini-Grant ($5,000)

Includes seed money for communities with a basic infrastructure already in place that need assistance promoting and educating parents, kids and community members on walking and biking to school easily and safely.

Mini-Grant Application Timeline

Guidelines for Applying

Grant applications must demonstrate partnerships with school, community and municipality representation. Please provide contact information for each of these sectors. Successful grantees must provide written collaborative entity agreements (CEAs) from these partners prior to award. CEAs are not needed at the time of application and are used in lieu of letters of support.

Applicant Eligibility

Schools enrolled in the Academy Program are encouraged to be a Keystone Healthy Zone (KHZ) School. To see if your school is a KHZ school, visit:

Fiduciary Responsibility

The organization that assumes fiduciary responsibility is responsible for completing status reports on behalf of the partnership and reporting according to established timelines.

Municipality: Any county, city, borough, incorporated town, township, or home rule municipality

Municipal Agency: Any official agency created by a municipal government under the laws of the Commonwealth such as municipal authorities, COG's and intergovernmental commissions.

Appropriate/Authorized Organization: An entity involved in recreation, education, or health which contributes to the overall quality of life of the residents of the applicant county as it relates to physical activity and/or nutrition. The organization (unless it is an educational institution) must be both tax exempt under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State, Bureau of Charitable Organizations (BCO). Evidence of 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status and BCO registration should be provided as part of the application.
